oscar's life

Tonight Oscar and I watched the "president's" speech...it looks like war is inevitable now...Oscar was feeling particularly gassy and made his views known--we had a good laugh about that. We also both shook our fists at the TV when Bush said "nu-cu-lar" for the 100th time in recent memory. The best sign I saw at one of the recent marches was "It's Nu-cle-ar, not nu-cu-lar, you idiot!" When I had my bizarre temp job at the Nuclear Energy Institute, one of their executives pronounced it nuck-u-lar--god help us all. But really, this war is so troubling that I feel sick about it and need to completely remove myself from the whole mess (except for the protests, which I think will get to be a full-time job here in DC).

In other more satisfying news, the weather has been warm and Oscar has been having a good time going to the park. He's absolutely fearless and just throws himself down the slide with no regard for his personal safety. He's definitely into corporeal thrills. Today we were playing a game with his bowl. He puts it on the back of his head and I sing the Adam Sandler chanukka/yarmulke song for him. He thinks it's hilarious and got so excited he ran into the wall.

He had a big day yesterday. We dropped by Barbara's house and he got to play with Parker. They played with tinker toys and helicopters. Parker was riding around the house on his tricycle like a maniac, but was so sweet, generous and careful with Oscar, though he did seem a little concerned about Oscar touching his toy plane. It seems like most older kids know instinctively that they should be gentle with younger kids (our president could undoubted learn a thing or two about conflict resolution if he went back to preschool...). Last night we had dinner with Shannon and Patrick and then went back to their place to watch Six Feet Under. It was fun to watch Oscar play with Oliver. He's very gentle with him now and doesn't pay any attention to the rest of us when the dog is around.

We're going to the beach this weekend (Rehoboth). It will be good to get out of town--living here, we just get so wrapped up in our little world.
