oscar's life

Last night we inaugurated the first Perez Family Pupusas and Christ Good Friday Commemoration. We met Mary Kate and Shannon at Ercilias for pupusas, platanos and horchata and then walked over to Sacred Heart for the procession. There were hundreds and hundreds of people. Women were carrying a big, sad statue of Mary and men were carrying Jesus, who was laying on his back. Oscar played in the playground and then we waited for a while holding candles. People started singing "Perdona a tu pueblo" (forgive your people). It was moving to see how much faith people have. Though I didn't see any flagellation, aside from the women carrying the ten foot tall, sad Mary. Nothing like those crowns of thorns and spiky things we saw in Atotonilco (Mexico). Oscar was really getting into the "santa." He really seems to gravitate toward religious icons. Unfortunately, it was way past bedtime, so just when the procession finally got started we had to head for home.

Today was a strange day. We were all kind of out of sorts and tired. Which was too bad, because it is Christian and my 11th anniversary... but we're going to celebrate next week. Funny, because our first date was also the day before Easter and ended up at the lutheran sunrise Easter service at the Sarasota dogtrack with Rudy Hernandez. Fun time.

Well, today we squandered our special day on a trip to Whole Foods. We walked down and took a cab home. Oscar has completely gotten over his momentary aversion to cabs. Still no idea what the problem was a few months ago...

But that's not to say that he isn't still inscrutable. Today is a perfect example. He woke up from his nap sleepy, but relatively happy. I got him dressed and we went into living room to play. He started acting really weird. His nose started running a lot and he was putting his forearm into his mouth and sucking on it. I couldn't get him to stop doing that to his arm. Then he just started crying and crying and wouldn't talk to us. He was lying on the couch face down sucking on his forearm inconsolably sobbing and drooling. Of course we both started freaking out, because we couldn't figure out what was wrong with him. Christian thought he must have a sore throat. I started to worry that he might have eaten something bad. To calm him down, I tried putting on Totoro (still his favorite movie), the sobbing subsided a little, but he wouldn't respond to us and wouldn't eat, drink or do anything else and he still wouldn't stop chomping on his forearm. I was on the verge of taking him to the emergency room, he was that out of sorts.

Finally, for no apparent reason, I decided to look at his pants and I realized that I had put his "big boy pants"/underwear on backwards. I took them off and put them on again and he immediately stopped crying, took his forearm out of his mouth, and was just fine.

He hadn't given any indication what the problem was! He didn't even seem to know himself, he just knew that something was horribly, horribly wrong.
