oscar's life

It's the tail end of Sakura time. This year wasn't like any other. It was cold and rainy and windy the entire time. Half of the petals got blown off halfway through, so there wasn't the usual blissful day of puffy blossoms. I was so distraught about the prospect of missing it that we just went anyway on Monday. We froze and got whipped around in the wind, but had a good time anyway. The trees are so old and gnarled, they reminded Oscar of the camphor tree in Totoro and he kept looking for "forest spirits" in all of the little nooks and crannies. We left a little offering of flowers, like the little girls do in the movie. Oscar re-enacted it by putting his hands together and bowing and saying "gracias." We walked up to the Breadline and had lunch. Oscar loves watching the guys in the kitchen making the bread. They gave him a cookie. Life is pretty good when you're two.

Yesterday the weather finally broke. I needed to go take photos in the neighborhood for a slide show for the "task force" so we all walked all over. Here are some of the pictures that I took. I'm working on a project to preserve and aid the small businesses in our neighborhood. We did our part by going to Columbia Heights Coffee, Panamericana Grocery and El Rinconcito II for pupusas.

Today was even nicer. We were wearing t-shirts and shorts. A far cry from the frozen, bundled-up-ness pictured above. I went to yoga, had lunch with Harry. Christian and Oscar met us and Tryst and we all hung out for a while at the bar. Then we went to Kalorama Park. Oscar got reacquainted with some of his little friends he hadn't seen all winter. The sandbox was jammed with little kids. One little boy wanted Oscar's tractor. Oscar could see how much the other kid wanted it and he started to cry, because he didn't want to share. He said "it's scary" (something he says when he's overcome with emotion). So instead of actively "not sharing" or giving the boy the toy, he threw it on the ground and ran away screaming. Very passive aggressive behavior--I hate to say it, but it reminded me a lot of Christian and some of his more irrational antics! Finally, they worked out a detente, but by then it was time for the other kid to go and he left in tears because he couldn't take the tractor with him. We walked around a little and Oscar skinned his knees for the first time. He said "pica mucho" ("it stings a lot"). He recovered. We watched some ants and the guys playing basketball. Picked up pine cones, inspected acorns, laughed at a bull dog, gave thanks for such a perfect day, and then finally went home.

For whatever reason, Oscar is really into rituals right now. So today I decided to take advantage of this and I told him that he was getting to be a big boy and that it was time to give Guadalupe his "chupete" (pacifier/lulu/nuk). I told him that there were little babies who needed it more than him. I brought this up several times throughout the day today. So tonight when it was time for bed, I took him downstairs to the Mexican-string-art-made-by-prisoners Guadalupe picture that we have in our dining room. We lit a candle and he put his pacifier right on the frame of the picture. Then he did the little bow again and said "gracias, Guadalupe." Worked like a charm. Didn't even ask for it again when I put him down for bed.

He's also really into hats. He got a little muslim prayer hat from Lisa Hurt this week (picture). He's got another little black baseball cap that he wears a lot. He's dancing like crazy and singing. He knows most of his alphabet. Can count to twenty in English and fifteen in Spanish. More later...
