oscar's life

We're in Florida right now. Oscar and Christian are napping. We went swimming this morning and everyone is worn out.

It has been really great to see the Perez family: Lolo, Lala, Ty, Shea, Tio Gator (Pat), Anky, Lolito, Donna, Ethan, Maya, Tres... I hope I'm not forgetting anyone. This is a big and boisterous family. There are always at least three or four conversations going on at once! Today we are going to meet Robbie and the triplets and Michael, Ty, Shea, Donna and Skip at a park.

Oscar already recognized everyone from the pictures he has studied at home, but I think it must be pretty surreal for him to see them all in person (and he keeps asking for those who he hasn't seen, like Michael (who has a cold), Neil, Kathy, Jessica, and Bill). But he seems right at home with everyone, climbing on his aunt, uncles, great-uncles and abuelos and giving lots of besos y abrazos.

It's strange to think that he is the only Perez (and Cytron) of his generation. Last night, he woke up in the middle of the night and loudly said "familia" and then went right back to sleep. He definitely understands the purpose of this trip. I wonder what his dreams are like right now!

Lolo looks good and his attitude and way of being is an inspiration to all of us. I really hope that I will be lucky enough to get to the stage that he is at and have such dignity and grace. And respect, I don't know if I've ever known someone who has the total respect of his family as Lolo does. Today he is playing in a domino tournament. I wonder how he did...

Christian says I need to work on my habit of complaining about everthing. He said he thinks he needs to stop casting doubt on everything--but he's not sure.

Going over to Anky's house was like going to a petting zoo with lots of cats and a dog. He was in heaven. He took a nice walk by the lake at Lolo and Lala's, fed ducks and threw his plastic gator toy in (he kept saying that gators live in the water, as his Everyone Poops book taught him). He now knows how to say "sandwich cubano" and is learning all kinds of other things that we never thought to teach him.

Of course, travelling with a toddler is challenging. Trying to make sure that everyone is fed and well-rested consumes a lot of energy. It doesn't help that Christian and I aren't really any more highly evolved when it comes to this. It makes me realize that our daily routine at home is remarkably disciplined. I'm just not used to seeing Oscar feel insecure or unsure, because he usually has a very good grasp on the world around him, even if it is the crazy urban jungle of DC. I've come to take that for granted. And I forget how different the rest of this country is from our strange insulated existence--it's a real culture shock.
