Happy Thanksgiving 2002--Makes me think about what we were all doing last Thanksgiving... I guess all these things will be linked together for all time now. We have a lot to be thankful for. What a year!

We are celebrating with Mom and Dixon in San Miguel. They had some of their closest friends over and had a veritable feast. Megan baked two pies (one sweet potato and one apple). Dixon made a first class turkey and garlic mashed potatoes that easily beat Cashion's.

A few days ago we celebrated Oscar's first birthday on the 22nd. Mom and Dixon organized a huge party to commemorate her 60th and his first. We'll have to post some photos later. It was an impressive collection of people and was very festive. I think Oscar's favorite part (and mine) was the mariachi trio. He really enjoyed listening to them play and he even kind of danced a little. The "tres leches" cake was a new discovery for him, and was enjoyed by all. He received so many presents it took us half of the next day to open them all. Everyone was very nice and Oscar made many new friends.

We're both going to have to post more about the trip and the birthday party when we have the time. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

We ran Oscar ragged this past weekend. On Saturday we spent what seemed like hours at Nordstrom's. At one point he got so overstimulated and tired that we went to sit in the lounge and he took off and walked about ten steps. He ate some pomegranate seeds, thai food and took a few sips of jasmine tea. Yesterday we did more running around downtown in the driving rain and went over to Shannon and Patrick's to watch the Sopranos. He loves going over there. He plays with their globe and chases Oliver around. They gave him two books: Como el Grinch Robo la Navidad and Curious George (which I now realize has some pretty colonialist, racist undertones, but the drawings are great). We've been reading to him a lot lately. Right now he seems particularly into his Piglet book, En el Campo, his Elmo book and Home for a Bunny.

We're leaving to go to Mexico on Wednesday. The weather has been so cold and dreary lately--it will be so nice to see the bright tropical sun in San Miguel. And I'm really glad that Oscar gets to share his first birthday with Bett. She will be his best birthday present (he will just lap up all of that attention) and he will hers, too!

Oscar has been getting braver in taking steps. Yesterday he took a step or two towards Megan. Tonight he took two or three steps on his own, covering a span of about 4 feet! He was pretty proud of himself and we were excited too. Of course, he is holding some object in his hands while he does this. Usually it's one of the balls from his activity playzone, or maybe a cylindrical object like a pen or a pretzel rod. Sometimes he can hold onto one of these things for hours at a time without letting go!
We have been playing games and reading to him. Today we read "Home for a Bunny" and he really enjoyed it. He also likes to watch the Baby Doolittle video with all the animals, and the picture book we bought in Spain, "En El Campo." Whenever I make the cow sounds he gets excited. Oscar's been making more sounds and seems to be putting things together. He got back into saying "Ba-Bye" and waving, which he started a few weeks ago and then stopped. Now he associates it with coming and going. He seems to use it for both. He also says "Ba Ba Ba" when he is getting hungry and maybe he's trying to say "bottle," I don't know. No more giggy-giggy! He's getting 2 or 3 bottles a day now, in addition to the teta. He's been eating a lot of different things. His favorite lately is matzo ball soup! Also he's been eating lots of mango, baby carrots, tofu (still), oatmeal, pasta, etc. We had a nice day today in the house (2 good naps). Tomorrow we want to go for another fall walk...

We had a nice time with Oscar today... we had lunch at Mixtec in Adams Morgan and walked to Kalarama Park. He played with some older kids (14 months)--he especially enjoyed a girl named Sofia. She walked up to him, called him niƱo, and he touched her face and then touched all of the buttons on her coat. When we were leaving, she gave him a kiss.

Lately, he has really immersed himself in play. He invents little games and dramas. One day I was crouching on the floor picking some smashed pretzel rods out of our rug. He came up behind me, grabbed my shirt and pulled himself up--then he started pushing on my back. I lost my balance and fell over and he started laughing hysterically. Now anytime Christian and I are in a precarious position, he tries to push us over and laughs and laughs.

Again, long time no blog. We've been busy as usual. Oscar is 11 months now. Today we went on a long walk in Rock Creek Park. It was a perfect fall day--blue sky, yellow light; the leaves are turning, we even saw a deer. We dressed Oscar up as Eeyore for Halloween (He loves it when we sing him the winnie the pooh song from the mobile he used to have over his crib--we don't really know the words, but try to make something interesting up. We do a lot of crazy song and dance productions around here, which is funny given my disdain for musicals. Other favorites are Ave Maria, You are my sunshine, Mariposita, You are my spendid butterfly... But I digress...)

He got really excited about his costume and we took him out on the stoop (one of his and our favorite activities) to hand out candy. He absolutely freaked out the first time he saw someone wearing a mask and Oscar's Halloween was over in under 15 minutes.

We've also been taking him to the National Gallery at least once a week. He loves the Calder room (and so do we) and the Rothkos. I'm not sure why, but he points and says dat-dat-dat whenever he sees a painting he likes. Christian has taken a liking to a Aelbert Cuyp painting of cows in the West wing. It's very agrarian, bovine, and peaceful and obviously far removed from our day to day cowless existence (oh Asturias, we miss your happy green-hay-eating cows with the bells on their necks).

Otherwise, not too much to report. He's got 11 teeth now. He's taking small steps on his own, but hasn't really started to walk without being close to the walls or furniture (though he doesn't really hold onto them anymore, he kind of trails his fingers across them for security. He's also become obsessed with cylindrical objects (like pens, pencils, chopsticks, straws, breadsticks, etc.) and balls. He's not really secure unless he is holding at least one of these things.

I'm going to try to add pictures directly into this blog, since I've been so atrocious about getting my act together to do Oscar's website. I'm such a perfectionist about certain, discrete organizational things that it makes it impossible for me to actually get anything done. That said, these pictures are particularly bad--our digital camera flash literally exploded in North Carolina, so we'll be doing quite a bit of blurry, conceptual stuff with natural light only. Not to mention the shirt I'm wearing--good god, what was I thinking?
