Been a while since I've blogged... We just got back yesterday from a week at the outer banks in Duck, NC. It was nice to get away--things have been pretty hectic and stressful lately. Oscar is really getting around now--climbing stairs, crawling like a maniac and almost--but not quite--walking. He started saying buh-bye last week and, for some reason, says it in a sort of southern drawl/flight attendant kind of way. We're not counting that as his first word, though--we've decided that his first word will have to be a noun or verb.
He had a lot of fun crawling around in the sand. We just let him crawl as much as he wanted, since the beach was empty. He took off and really didn't look back. He's got so much confidence and independence--he never seems afraid or intimidated by anything and has definitely breezed right through the "stranger anxiety" phase.
One day we drove all the way down the Cape Hatteras National Seashore to Ocracoke. It was a really beautiful drive and interesting to see Ocracoke after more than 15 years (my family went there a lot when I was a kid). It has hardly changed at all--I couldn't believe it, because a lot of the rest of the Outer Banks seems to be over-run with subdivisions of gigantic houses and strip malls...Unfortunately we got there right at dusk and I had forgotten how insanely vicious their mosquitos are. We literally got chased by a swarm of them and they bit right through our clothes. I'm glad we went--it's definitely one of the places that resides in my memory pretty deeply, especially Howard Street, the oak-lined, sandy street with the cemetery where we usually rented a cottage (with gardenias in the front and a fig tree in the back yard).
