oscar's life

Wow, August has been a sparse blogging month... I suppose that is because this is the month when Oscar has really gotten his feet under himself and he is starting to really do some damage! Now he can stand, pull himself up on furniture, topple over, make very tentative efforts to take steps, and discover the hazards of gravity. It's fun, but exhausting, to watch. He's going through something developmental where he feels compelled to pick out small shapes in a large field of color. He can find the tiniest speck of dust, pick it up and examine it. One of his favorite things to do is crawl and scoot around on the floor hunting for (and then trying to eat) lint and dust bunnies.

We've really been running ourselves ragged with work, going through all of our possessions, and fixing up our basement (Champ is moving in down there in a few weeks). Oscar spent Sunday at Shannon and Patrick's place, while we abused ourselves in the interest of home improvement. He really loves going over there--they have a dog (Oliver) who he follows around (but is always just out of reach).

Today he had his 9 month doctor's appointment--now he's really "one of us" (like in the movie Freaks?)--he's been on the outside longer than the inside. They told us to feed him more, because his weight gain has hit a plateau... So, afterwards, we went to Mark's Kitchen in Takoma Park and he ate sweet potatoes and grilled tofu. He will still eat pretty much anything. The doctor told us not to give him any hot dogs, which made me laugh. My baby eat hot dogs--never! Christian is a bit disturbed by his acceptance--and dare I say--enthusiasm for tofu...

Long time no blog, again. Megan and I have been cleaning out the basement for the past few days. Going through letters, photos, and detritus of the past 10 years. It has been a little exhausting but good to separate the wheat from the chaff. Today we brought Oscar down with us and had him sitting in his saucer for a while. Then we put him on the floor so we could go through some boxes of books. A minute later Megan asked me "Did you do that to him?" I turned around and Oscar was standing!--he had pulled himself up, and was holding onto a crate of records for balance! What a shock to just turn around and see him standing there looking proud of himself. He is such an amazing little guy, it is so fun watching him discover all the new things he can do...

Yesterday I took Oscar to the pool on Haines Point with Barbara and Parker. He really loves the water. Afterwards I started walking over to Capitol Hill to meet Christian. It was over 100 degrees and there wasn't a patch of shade anywhere in Southwest. Oscar and I got completely overheated to the point that I finally had a Scarlet O'Hara moment and gave up and called Christian and made him catch a cab to come pick us up even though we were just five blocks away (I didn't have cab fare). We ended up having dinner at A.V. with Oscar sleeping in my lap the whole time.

Today we went out to the burbs and drove around aimlessly, because there was a storm and for once it wasn't too hot to drive (we don't have any AC in the car, so we haven't driven it in a month). Had lunch at the Middle Eastern bakery. Oscar ate hummous and lentil soup for the first time. Then we drove around Annandale (a.k.a. Koreatown) and went to the best Sanrio/Hello Kitty store ever. When we got home Oscar had the biggest poop of his life and then fell asleep with eating dinner!
